Some chapters in life come with a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and reflection — a reminder of how fast time passes and how much love fills the spaces in between. That was exactly the feeling during the Lyons family session along the trails of Lake Hodges in Rancho Bernardo.
Achley arrived with her two sons and Mozzarella, their beloved dog, to capture a moment in time that would be cherished forever. Her oldest is preparing to graduate and head off to college, while her youngest is stepping into middle school, and Achley herself is approaching retirement. These milestones could feel overwhelming, but this session was all laughter, playful nudges, and warm hugs — a gentle celebration of family, change, and togetherness.
The trails at Lake Hodges offered a perfect backdrop — wide open spaces to explore, golden light peeking behind the mountains, and quiet corners for moments of stillness. The winter evening cast that warm California glow that makes every hug and glance feel a little more radiant. Mozzarella was there for every squeeze, tail wag, and moment of pure joy, reminding us that pets are often the heartbeats of family sessions.
This session wasn’t about poses or perfection. It was about honoring the transitions, the little gestures, and the fleeting moments before big changes arrive. Documenting families in this way — in natural light, in meaningful locations, with room to breathe — is why I love being a San Diego family photographer.
If you’re hoping to capture your own Lake Hodges family session, whether it’s milestones, transitions, or simply a season you want to remember, I’d love to create images that feel intentional, joyful, and deeply personal.
